In Panama Mother’s Day is a public holiday and is celebrated every year in December, i.e. December 8, 2020. , coinciding with the Feast of the Immaculate Conception in the Roman Catholic Church.
The Celebration of Mother’s Day on December 8 was suggested for the first time by Hercilia Arias Velasquez, the wife of the then President of Panama Florencio Harmodio Arosemena. The party was officially established in 1930.
According to another version, the celebration of Mother’s Day in Panama was an initiative of the Rotary Club. In 1924, the Rotary Club of Panama asked that the party be held on May 11. The proposal was changed by Panamanian politicians to be celebrated on Mother’s Day on December 8.
The third version states that The Catholic Panamanians wanted to turn the Feast of the Immaculate Conception into a public holiday, but faced resistance from representatives of the secular population who wanted to maintain the separation between the church and the state. The celebration of Mother’s Day on December 8 was the commitment they reached.
Be that as it may, Mother’s Day has become one of Panama’s holidays. On this day, mothers are gifted with flowers and gifts. All Panamanians express their love, respect and gratitude to the women who gave them their lives.
